Identifying the Winning Hand in Poker
Almost all poker game variants share hand rankings. While the winning hand may vary from game to game, the hands in a poker game rarely change in ranking. Poker, regardless of the poker variant, uses a deck of 52 European playing cards, with two or four jokers. The jokers are usually not used, but the other cards have rankings that are used to define the winning hand. In a deck of cards, the suits do not have any rankings. Cards are ranked from aces to twos, where the ace is the highest card, followed by king, queen, jack, and then ten to two, in numerical order.
Most of the time, the winning hand in poker is the high hand. This means that the player who has been dealt the hand with the highest ranking will get to win the pot. Other times though, a poker game can be lowball or a high-low split. In a game of lowball poker, the lowest hand is considered the winning hand. Usually, for lowball games, there is a "qualifier" for what kind of hand can win, such as "eight or better," which means that a low hand that can be considered a winning hand must only have cards that are ranked eight and below. If, for example, a player has a hand that looks like two three, five, six, seven, it can be considered for the winning hand in a lowball game. If the hand was two three, five, six, ten, then it would no longer qualify as a possible winning hand. A high-low split, on the other hand is when two hands are awarded the pot: it is divided evenly between the player with the highest hand, and the player with the lowest hand. In a high-low split, the winning low hand usually also has to have a qualifier, much like in lowball.
The winning hand in poker is identified after the final betting round; if there is more than one player left in contention for the pot, there is a showdown. During a showdown, all of the remaining players have to display their cards, so that their hands can be seen and identified. When the winning hand or hands are identified, the pot is given or split accordingly. Sometimes though, it is not necessary to have a showdown. If, at any point during the game, all of the other players except for one fold or forfeit, then the one player who has not folded gets to win the pot. They do not even have to show their hand.
